A Perfect Circle

A Perfect Circle

A Perfect Circle (APC) is an alternative rock supergroup formed by guitarist Billy Howerdel and Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan. The original incarnation of the band also included Paz Lenchantin on bass, Troy Van Leeuwen on guitar, and Tim Alexander on drums. The latest line-up features Marilyn Manson and former Nine Inch Nails bassist Jeordie White, former guitarist for The Smashing Pumpkins, James Iha, and session drummer Josh Freese, who is most well known for his work with Nine Inch Nails and The Vandals. Despite having a varied cast since inception, the stylistic content of the songs has remained consistent with Howerdel as composer, and Keenan penning the lyrics.

A Perfect Circle has released three albums: Mer de Noms, Thirteenth Step and eMOTIVe. The group has not recorded, toured or released any new material since its hiatus began in 2004.

Mer De Noms (2000)

Mer de Noms (French for "Sea of Names") was recorded straight after the bands first show at LA Viper Room on August 15, 1999. In the album review by Rolling Stone, Pat Blashill wrote that Keenan "added an almost operatic angst to Howerdel's songs" and concluded that "A Perfect Circle sound like a desperate dream of what rock used to be." Allmusic's review expressed that "there's little question that the addicting combination of Keenan's aching voice and Howerdel's accomplished songs and production skills made for one of 2000's best splashes in whatever was left of 'modern rock'."

The album produced three singles: "Judith", "3 Libras", and "The Hollow".

Thirteenth Step (2003)

Thirteenth Step is the second album from A Perfect Circle and the follow-up to 'Mer De Noms' which was released in 2000. 'Thirteenth Step' marks the band's first release with guitarist James Iha (The Smashing Pumpkins) and bass player Jeordie White (aka Twiggy Ramirez), who replace Troy Van Leeuwen and Paz Lenchantin respectively.

The album follows on from the previous release and features the same dark melodic art-rock with alt-metal and gothic influences but moves forward a great distance. With a little time and effort, fans will discover a greater sound in this CD.

The first single from the album was "Weak and Powerless", followed by "The Outsider" and "Blue".

Wildcard

Emotive (2004)

The album contains 10 political covers, and 2 'original' songs which are also covers. "Passive" is a cover/remake of "Vacant" by the ex-group Tapeworm and "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums" is also a follow up of the song "Pet" released by A Perfect Circle in 2003 on the album Thirteenth Step. It debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #2 behind the various artist compilation, Now 17. It was certified Gold by the RIAA on December 9, 2004. The album cover shows Los Angeles in an Armageddon-like state.
